Its All In The Head!

For a lot of us, the biggest challenge isn't always our fitness, how much we weigh or how much time we spend in the gym.

The simple fact is it can be the challenges of the mind that can bring us to a grinding halt.

You'll know what I mean by that niggling little voice of negativity in the back of our minds saying all the reasons why we can't do something.

That little voice always starts out small as just an annoying niggle but then as our journey goes on it gets louder and louder until all reason is drowned out and only the reasons why we should give up are left.

As I've said this doesn't just apply to the unfit amongst us! professional athletes get it too, it's like all those negative words that have been said over the years snowball into one avalanche and all reason disappears.

So how can we overcome this issue?

For me it's about distracting myself, when I'm out on one of my epic journies I make sure I have plenty of distraction with me to help quail that niggle.

First, before I go I plan my route looking for landmarks or places of interest along the way so I will always have something to look forward to.

Second, make a banging playlist something with only upbeat songs, don't do what I did once on an ultra challenge, and have a sad song play in the worst of times leaving me sobbing on a roadside!!!

Make those tunes upbeat something you can pace out too

Third, always have regular rest stops to fuel up and recharge it's amazing how often I have forgotten to eat or drink then wonder why I feel so down! That little hit of sugar really does do wonders.

Fourth, company is always a good idea but only if your companion is as upbeat as you the last thing you need is to be walking with a Debbie Downer!!! If you don't have someone to walk with you have someone on speed dial that can chat you out of the impending doom.

Fifth, when that voice is at screaming point don't let it break you take all those negative thoughts and use as fuel to propel you on. Make it your mission to quiet that voice by showing it you can and you will.

Look, it's not going to be easy nothing worth achieving ever is, but if you want to still that voice and reach that goal you must break through and you can! self-belief is an amazing thing once you believe it it will happen.

For me I always envision the view from the top of that mountain or the feeling of crossing that finish line those feelings are stronger than any little voice and once you have achieved it once it'll be easier the next time.

So what is your next challenge let me know and tell me how you get on.

Until next time
