Two years ago a friend introduced me to the Saloman trainers they looked really nice but with my ankle issues, I didn't think it was worth the risk plus they aren't cheap!
When out on the ultra challenges a lot of people also wore them and all were swearing by them I felt that maybe they were worth a go.
So this month I decided to take the plunge and thought even if I don't feel comfortable with them when I go out hiking maybe the stability would be good for in-door training.
I have to say when I got them I was a little excited to get going with them they look so sleek and shiny!! but again a little nervous to go out as from what I could see had no ankle support.
But on the first look, I was impressed by the amount of grip they had on the sole, and once on the insole was very comfortable and fitted well with my wide foot.
I decided for my first outing in them to take on the Wrekin a hill in the Blue Hills in Shropshire with an elevation of 407mtrs a great place for training hikes with some uneven terrain. My usual time up and down the Wrekin is around 1hr 30mins so wanted to aim for at least that.
I soon got comfy and eased into a nice walking pace, the trainer moving nicely from the wet hard standing track to the more cobbled and leafy terrain higher up. I found that once I adjusted my balance I was able to move faster uphill than in previous hikes.
Upon reaching the top I was able I noted my feet felt good and even though it was a bit on the wet side my feet were still bone dry!
Coming back down I decided to take the more rocky descent finding my footing quickly and more sure-footed than I have in a long time.

You see after my last leg injury I have been terrified to walk anywhere without ankle support in case I tripped and re-injured the leg but the biggest issue I have had with my current boot has been they are not very good on slippy terrain so I would find myself slowing right down to make sure I wouldn't slip and fall But the more I walked in these new trainers then more I felt comfortable and even had a little jog the further down the hill I went! Now, this for me is totally unheard of!! One down doing a time check I had shaved off 45 mins of my usual hike time!!!!
Fast forward two weeks and you'll find me back in Egypt. Having concurred my fear of the terrain in the UK and feeling great in my new footwear it was time to test them out in a totally different environment!
Egypt, even though we are at the start of winter is still fairly warm, and walking around in the heat can produce swelling in limbs including the feet so I knew that this would be a great test. So my first proper hike took me into the hills here in Luxor up and down some very gnarly terrain!

Now usually when I go on this kind of hie I'm strapped up have the best ankle support on that I can find just in case!
This time I just took my new footwear and prayed I wouldn't roll my ankle!
I needn't of worried :-)
On the hill climbs the soles of the trainers stuck like glue making it much easier for me to walk. On the descents, they really came into their own! I noticed that the soles would stabilize my footing really well on the stones I was traversing down taking the pressure off my knees and taking the stress out of the descent living me to concentrate more on the best way down than on 'oh god am I going to slip fall'

After the 27km that I hiked, I didn't feel foot fatigued at all, usually, after 12km the balls of my feet start to ache this time I didn't have any of that, and to my surprise, not one blister!!!! which again for me is totally unheard of!
The only issue I had was muscle ache from not drinking enough water!!!
They are also mega easy to clean too! for the dust I only had to brush them off, if I wanted to make them look like new I'd just wipe them over with a damp cloth.
So I think you can guess where I'm going with this!!! Yes, I LOVE my new Saloman trainers!!!
They are comfortable lightweight and great overall terrain that I have encountered so far.
Only time will tell if they will keep up with me and the amount of Km's I clock up every month
I'll check in again in 3 months to let you all know!!!
